The Role

Berthon has an immediate position available for an apprentice to join our small and friendly team of boatmovers and riggers in a busy boatyard, dealing with internal and external customers. Ideally the successful candidate will already have some boat handling skills and/or sailing experience and an interest in moving into this role.  A pro-active practical approach and can-do attitude is essential to this fast-moving role.

Main Duties will include training to carry out all the following

  • Learning to set up and use a variety of boat moving equipment
  • Assist collection and return of boats to Marina by towing with yard launch
  • Assist Lift & launch
  • Pressure washing hulls and stern gear
  • Blocking off ashore
  • General care/maintenance of machinery
  • General care/maintenance of yard launches, Storage of shores/blocks/slithers/cradles
  • Cradle maintenance and records
  • Checking shores/cradles after heavy weather
  • Keep gantries, lift pads, docks and yard tidy
  • Assist in disconnect/connect rigging
  • Unbend sails
  • Fit or remove covers
  • Splicing and ropework
  • Mast stepping and un-stepping
  • Inspecting and replacing running and standing rigging

If you are applying to be a boatmoving/rigging apprentice, you MUST have:

  • 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at 9-4 to include English and Maths
  • A strong interest in Sailing/ Yachting/ Boating
  • A head for heights for working aloft masts
  • Ability to undertake various challenging manual handling activities both ashore and on the water in a safe and effective manner
  • Commitment to work outside all year round and in all weathers
  • Ability to follow instructions, enthusiastic with good communication skills

The training and opportunities you may receive:

  • Level 2 Marina and boatyard operative apprenticeship standard
  • Functional skills in English and Maths if required.
  • Specific machinery training with experience including:
  • Forklift
  • Cranes
  • Tractors
  • Slinger signaller
  • Powerboat Level 2
  • Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety and LEAN manufacturing as applicable
  • Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

Salary:

£7.26 in year one, rising to £12.79 in year four (£15100-£26609)
