Jersey Lifeboat Association 880: The Fastest Inshore Rescue Vessel in the Channel Islands

The Gemini WR880 built for the Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA) stands as a powerful testament to what happens when the right people get their hands on the right tools. With a top speed exceeding 50 knots, this is more than just a fast rescue boat—it’s the fastest inshore rescue vessel in the Channel Islands. Designed by Berthon RIB Solutions in close partnership with JLA, it’s purpose-built for one thing: saving lives.

Chosen after rigorous sea trials, the WR880 impressed JLA Coxswain Andy Hibbs and his veteran crew not only with its speed, but with its outstanding seakeeping—a hallmark of the Gemini platform, already trusted by South Africa’s NSRI. The WR880 performs where others hesitate: rough water, high winds, fast currents.

A Proud Independent Chapter – The Formation of the JLA

The Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA) was formed in 2018 as an independent search and rescue organisation, born from a shared vision among seasoned local crew to continue providing lifesaving services around Jersey’s coastline. Many of its founding members had previously volunteered with the RNLI, and their experience and commitment helped lay the foundation for a new chapter in Jersey’s proud maritime safety history.

The transition marked a community-led initiative, Backed by strong community support and generous local fundraising, the JLA now operates as an independent lifeboat charity. The goal? Simple — fast, reliable rescue around Jersey’s coastline, with equipment and training shaped specifically for the island’s conditions. Since then, the JLA has gone from strength to strength — commissioning a fleet of modern vessels, including the WR880 ALBERT PINEL, and responding to countless emergency calls.

While the JLA operates independently, it remains part of the broader UK and Channel Islands search and rescue network, and there is mutual respect between organisations working toward the shared goal of saving lives at sea.

Built for Real-World SAR Operations

Underneath the sleek, workboat profile is a robust SAR platform, engineered for the harshest conditions. Powered by twin Mercury 225hp outboards and supported by two 300-litre long-range fuel tanks, this WR880 has the range and thrust to respond fast, and stay on scene.

A 300L water ballast system—supplied by Salmon Power Sports and standard for RNLI spec boats—boosts stability in rough sea states, while a full self-righting system offers vital peace of mind in capsize scenarios. The stern features a robust reboarding ladder and a 500kg-rated towing post—ideal for assisting disabled vessels. From the deck up, this is a purpose-built rescue craft.

Precision Navigation and Situational Awareness

Onboard electronics are equally mission-focused. Raymarine radar, twin Axiom displays, a FLIR thermal camera, DF antenna, and remote-control searchlights all combine to give the JLA crew unmatched visibility and control—in daylight, at night, or in poor weather. Crew communication is handled through a wireless Diamond system, fully integrated with the boat’s VHF system.

The helm is laid out with practicality in mind, featuring a well-balanced console, ergonomic controls, and a second multifunction display to aid in SAR patterns. Every detail has been thought through by operators who know the job, and built by a team that knows how to make it happen.

Comfort Meets Capability

The JLA version of the WR880 is fitted with Allsalt SHOXS shock-mitigating seats, which allow crews to operate longer and recover quicker after extended stints in rough conditions. The seating is track-mounted for modular deck configurations—leaving space for a stretcher, gear, or additional crew.

Built from commercial-grade DTEX 1670 Orca Hypalon, the tubes are strong, UV-resistant, and built to take the hits. The hull design and high-volume tubes provide a stable, dry ride and excellent handling in cross chop and swell.

Locally Funded, Globally Proven

One of the most compelling aspects of the JLA WR880? Every penny of its quarter-million-pound build was raised through local donations. In a time of uncertainty, the people of Jersey rallied to support the JLA’s mission. Andy Hibbs, the driving force behind the organisation, has led with resolve and purpose since the founding of the JLA in response to events in 2017.

The WR880 is an incredible asset for our station and crew. Its speed and capability will make a real difference in saving lives at sea.” — Andy Hibbs, JLA Coxswain

“That is the most capable and good-looking rescue platform I have had the good fortune to be involved with. A rescue workhorse is born.” — Mark Robertson, Design Engineer at Gemini Marine
